The Higher Education Value Add Index compares each provider’s gap between free-school-meal (FSM) and non-FSM students with the sector’s. Sector = 1.00. Search for a provider to see its index, or why it doesn’t have one.

How the index is calculated
It is cumulative. Completion is measured as a share of entrants, so non-continuers count as non-completers; attainment (a first or upper second) is measured as a share of entrants too, so non-completers count as non-attainers. The cumulative attainment gap is the non-FSM rate minus the FSM rate. The provider’s attainment value add is the sector’s gap minus its own.
HEVA = 1 + (attainment value add ÷ sector gap). The sector’s cumulative attainment gap in 2022-23 is 17.96 percentage points (completion gap 11.48). Sector = 1.00. Above 1 is a smaller FSM gap than the sector; below 1 a larger one. A negative gap means FSM students out-performed non-FSM students at that provider.
